An introduction to Whittington
The rural parish is a sought after area being only 25 minutes car journey from Newcastle. The main centre of population is the lovely traditional village of Great Whittington with its beautiful honey coloured stone buildings.
The derivation of the name is possibly from the Old English “Hwita+ing+tun” being “Hwita’s estate” or the 9th century “Hwitantone” meaning “the town of Hwitta or Witta (the white man)”.
Great Whittington has a very popular 17th century former coaching inn that serves high quality meals and the Women's Institute and some other organisations meet in the village. The parish straddles the line of Hadrian’s Wall; sadly, long demolished and buried beneath in the 18th century by General Wade’s Military Road, the B6318.
The parish includes, to the north, the hamlets of Bingfield and Hallington and Halton Castle, in private ownership, lies just south of the Military Road.
