An introduction to Wall
The parish and village both take their name from the nearby Roman wall. The Emperor Hadrian has also given his name to the village pub which has a fine restaurant.
Wall village is just over 4 miles north of Hexham and is within easy reach of Newcastle being less than 26 miles from the city centre. The picturesque houses of beautiful local stone are built around a large area of village green around which also sits the church (C of E), Methodist chapel and village hall.
Less than one mile to the north east of the village, on the line of Hadrian’s Wall, now beneath the Military Road (A6318), stands a large wooden cross. This marks the battle of Heavenfield or “Hefenfeith” where in AD635 the army of Prince Oswald, heir to the Kingdom of Northumbria, defeated the Celts under Cadwallon. Oswald erected a wooden cross on what is now the site of the chapel of St Oswald’s.
