An introduction to Simonburn
The parish of Simonburn is a large and tranquil area of some 15 square miles with Hadrian’s Wall its southern boundary. The village of Simonburn is 10 miles north west of Hexham and approximately 31 miles from Newcastle.
The village and the hamlet of Townhead together with outlying farmsteads form the bulk of the population centres of the parish. Simonburn village, with the traditional honey coloured stone buildings and old alms houses, is built around the village green and church lych gate.
The old school is now used as a village centre, there is a village store and post office and tea rooms. The area which once reverberated in the 15th & 16th centuries to the cross border raiders (Reivers), is now quiet. The Pennine Way long distance footpath passes through the west of the parish and farming and tourism have replaced raiding and quarrying on the fells and crags.
