An introduction to Sandhoe
The small, quiet, rural parish lies within an area of 4 square miles and the village of the same name lies just under 3 miles north east of Hexham across the river Tyne. The name of the parish probably derives from the Old English for “sandy heights”. The largest centres of population are situated at Oakwood and Anick with a smaller settlement at Beaufront.
Beaufront Castle, rebuilt as a Victorian gentleman’s house is possibly the major building in the parish along with the House of St Camillus, a former religious building, and now a centre for holistic treatment.
Properties in the parish range from individual dwellings and farm building conversions to pre- and post- Second World housing stock and new traditional stone built houses. The hamlet of Beaufront houses the first school and Oakwood has a Women's Institute. Although a quiet and peaceful location, Sandhoe is within 30 minutes drive from Newcastle.
