An introduction to Prudhoe
The town council encompasses just under 6 square miles of mainly built up areas on the south bank of the Tyne. Prudhoe, at 11 miles, is virtually mid way between Hexham and Newcastle; the town has a railway station and good transport links along and across the Tyne valley area.
The derivation of Prudhoe is not, as many believe, “Proud Heights” but probably from the Old English “Prud(a)+hoh” meaning “hill or high spur belonging to Pruda”, the town has a12th century castle when the town was known as “Prudho”.
The area was once dotted with coal mines and a former chemical works used by-products of the mining processes. Newer Industries now flourish and play a major part of Prudhoe’s economy and well-being, several industrial estates and a factory occupy the area where the pits once stood.
Prudhoe has reasonable shopping facilities including banks, supermarkets, a library, a swimming pool and leisure centre. To the east of the town is a golf course and hospital. There are care homes, childminders and nurseries, the town has four first schools including one at Mickley, two middle schools and a high school, adult education facilities. The town has various churches and chapels catering for most major faiths, and two Women's Institutes.
