An introduction to Melkridge
The largely rural parish extends for an area of roughly 6 square miles and stretches from the banks of the river South Tyne to the fells two miles north of Hadrian’s Wall. The name is derived from the Old English “meoluc+hryeg” meaning “the ridge where the milk is produced”.
The large hamlet of Melkridge, with its manor house, converted church and chapels is a quiet backwater having been bypassed by the busy A69 trunk road. The village is two miles east of Haltwhistle and just over 13 miles from Hexham to the east. A rugged section of the Roman wall and the long distance Pennine Way footpath passes through the parish.
The housing stock is varied which belies its former importance as a farming, stockholding, mining and possible smelting centre; the shops and business in Melkridge having long since been converted into dwellings.
