An introduction to Kirkwhelpington
Bisected by the A696 Trunk Road, the parish is an area of approximately 18 square miles of former "Reivers' territory". The parish is centred on the attractive village of the same name and including various outlying farms, bastles (fortified farmsteads) and hamlets especially the hamlet of Kirkharle, birthplace of "Capability" Brown, the renowned 18th century landscape architect..
The parish name derives from a mixture of Old English and possibly Old Scandinavian, "kirkja+Hwelp+ing+tun" meaning "the church of the estate associated with a person called Hwelp". Kirkwhelpington is a sought after and quiet village some 20 miles north of Hexham and 22 miles north west of Newcastle along the A696 trunk road.
The village has beautiful and traditional stone built properties, a small newly built estate, a village inn, the parish church of St Bartholomew's, a village hall with a carpet bowls team and an art centre converted from a former chapel. The village also hosts the Kirkley Women's Institute.
