An introduction to Humshaugh
Walkers and ramblers would find fascinating paths and byways within the 4.5 square miles of the parish with the quiet residential village of Humshaugh at its hub. The parish also includes the hamlets of Chollerford, Chesters and Walwick. The parish's name probably derives from the Old English "Hun+halh" meaning "nook of land (or flat area near the river) of a man named Hun".
Humshaugh has traditional, new build and former council housing stock, has a doctors' surgery, a public house, church and Methodist chapel, a post office and village store. The village has a first school and a Women's Institute and an award winning hotel with health club is situated on the west bank of the North Tyne at Chollerford.
The parish includes the fascinating ruins of the Roman cavalry fort at Chesters and remains of the 190 foot long bridge that once carried the foot traffic and vehicles of the soldiers manning Hadrian's wall. Adjacent to Chesters is Hexham Herbs which contains the National thyme collection within its walled gardens.
