An introduction to Horsley
The parish is situated in approximately 6 square miles of the scenic east Tynedale. The quiet village of Horsley has benefited from the A69 bypass as the route passed through the centre of the village up until the 1970s. The name derives from the Old English "hors+leah" meaning "the meadow where the horses are kept"
The village is 12 miles east of Hexham and just over 10 miles from the centre of Newcastle. Horsley has a mixed stock of traditional and modern stone clad properties, it has child minding facilities, a Women's Institute, a newsagent and post office and has two fine public houses, both former coaching inns, serving excellent food.
Horsley is served by bus routes 685, 687 and 688, fishing takes place at Whittle Dene reservoir and Horsley woods has a wide range of plants, a community of roe deer and the rare red squirrel can occasionally be seen.
