An introduction to Hexham
Hexham is a Town Council rather than a Parish and is the “capital” of Tynedale being the administrative and commercial centre of the district. The town council has six wards served by a total of 16 councillors and covers a town and rural area of approximately 11 square miles . The Venerable Bede, in his writings of the 8th century, noted the settlement of “Hagulstaldes Ham”, Old English meaning “The warrior’s homestead”.
Hexham is a vibrant market town with a population of over 12,000 and has a full range of shops and supermarkets, other facilities include all major banks and building societies, cinema, theatre, library, swimming pool, leisure centre and a town park (The Sele) adjacent to the 7th century Abbey and an attractive riverside park.
The town also has a race course, a municipal and a private golf course. Along with other organisations, Three Rotary clubs and three Women's Institute meet in the Hexham area.
Hexham is a “transport hub” with a railway station and bus station and being situated 1 mile south of the A69 trunk road is within 24 miles of Newcastle to the east, and Carlisle 35 miles to the west.
The town has a popular livestock market, has a variety of industries along the north eastern bank of the Tyne and has a vast and varied housing stock and has many modern housing estates. There are many fine old buildings including the Abbey founded in Ad 674, the Moot (meeting) Hall and the Old Town Gaol.
