An introduction to Hedley
The village of Headley on the hill is a small community in an area of approximately 4 square miles and sits on a high ridge to the south of the river Tyne with extensive panoramic views. The name derives from the Old English “heath+leah” a “woodland clearing where the heather grows”.
The area was once productive in mining, both coal and mineral, and the small village of Hedley sits astride a former lead road a droving and mineral transportation highway.
Hedley has a welcoming inn serving good food, has traditional and modern stone built properties and, just to the east of the village, there is a popular gliding centre. Shops and facilities are in nearby Stocksfield or the larger shopping area of Prudhoe.
The village is served by a daily bus service to Hexham, 11 miles to the west while Newcastle is approximately 23 miles “downstream” eastwards along the south bank of the Tyne.
