An introduction to Healey
Healey is probably the least populated Tynedale parish with just over 200 souls and forms an area, mainly forest covered, of 11 square miles. The parish name is derived from the Old English “heah+leah” simply meaning “a high meadow”.
The parish population is thinly spread including a small hamlet at Healey complete with a picturesque church (C of E) and converted school house and several large matching stone built houses. The extensive grounds of Minsteracres, a former Passionist Monastery, include: private housing, a centre for Christian learning and a Retreat House, a walled garden used by Northumbria Daybreak. The parish has productive forestry and a saw mill.
The hamlet of Healey is 10 miles from Hexham and 22 miles from Newcastle and the nearest shopping facilities are to be found in the neighbouring village of Stocksfield, 2 miles to the north east. Sporting facilities include sailing at nearby Derwent reservoir and golf at Slaley Hall.
