An introduction to Haltwhistle
The parish is centred around the large village (population 3,900) of Haltwhistle and extends over an area of just under 5 square miles. The name has nothing to do with the railways, as the derivation is probably from the Old English “hawi+twisla” meaning “the bluish-grey confluence”, i.e. where the local burn joins the Tyne.
Haltwhistle, Tynedale’s “western capital”, is well served with amenities, has two supermarkets and a variety of shops, a care home, child minders and a nursery, has first and middle schools and adult education facilities. Other amenities include a dentist and a health centre, a pharmacy, three newsagents, a library, several public houses and hotels. Along with other organisations, members of a Women's Institute meet in the village.
Those of a sporting nature are well served with carpet and outdoor green bowls, football, cricket, golf and a leisure centre with outdoor swimming pools. Surrounded by miles of rolling hills and just south of Hadrian’s wall the parish of Haltwhistle caters for the keen and casual walker.
Churches and chapels cater for members of the Church of England, Roman Catholics, Methodists and members of the United Reformed Church. There is a vast mixture of property in the parish ranging from 19th century stone dwellings, pre- and post-war and newly built housing, sheltered accommodation and areas former council dwellings.
