An introduction to Greenhead
The parish has an fantastically large amount of Roman history within its 5.5 square miles. The parish stretches from the A69 in the south to beyond the Roman wall at the northern boundary. The parish covers one of the more rugged and fascinating stretches of Hadrian’s wall and includes the forts of Aesica and Magnis and various turrets.
The former quarry of Walltown Crags has been converted into a nature reserve and picnic site by the National Park and opposite the quarry the Roman Army Museum provides entertainment for visitors. The former coal mine of Blenkinsopp, just south of the main A69, was the last productive working drift mine in the United Kingdom.
The main area of population is the village of Greenhead with its traditional stone housing, modernised colliery properties, church of St Cuthbert’s, first school and village hall. The very attractive Millennium Green was a village project and the area is complemented by a public house and a tea rooms.
