An introduction to Featherstone
The parish is 6 square miles of walkers’ and naturalists’ paradise. Featherstone is 17 miles from Hexham and 20.5 from Carlisle. The three hamlets of Featherstone, Rowfoot and Park Village make up the bulk of the population, the remainder living in the outlying areas. Facilities in the parish include a chapel, Women's Institute and a welcoming public house complete with restaurant.
The parish name probably derives from the Old English “feother+stan” meaning “a place at the four stones”. Near Featherstone castle and overlooking the river South Tyne is an evocative reminder of the Second World War in the form of the remains of the prisoner of war camp.
Parts of the parish were once heavily mined for both coal, lead and other minerals. Nowadays; farming, tourism and stewardship of the grouse moorland are the main activities. The “easy” gradients of the former Haltwhistle to Alston railway track offer good walking within the parish.
