An introduction to Falstone
The Parish of Falstone contains over 75% of Kielder reservoir and is one of the largest Tynedale parishes with an area of just over 44 square miles, mainly laid to forest and is 27 miles north west of Hexham. The name probably derives from the Old English “fal+stan” meaning “a stone dwelling” or “the stony pasture belonging to Fal”.
There are few facilities in Falstone village which sits in the shadow of the massive earth dam holding back the reservoir of Kielder Water. However the village has a tea room, a public house, one inn on the outskirts, a church (C of E) and a Methodist chapel and bus routes 714, 814 and 815 serve the village and surrounding area.
The parish includes part of the sailing, camping, caravanning and numerous leisure facilities of Kielder reservoir sited at the Leaplish and Tower Knowe (Northumbrian Water) centres and at Craneheugh there is the activity centre run by the Calvert Trust.
