An introduction to Corsenside
Remains of Roman camps and 19th century ironworks are within the 18 square miles of the parish. The main centres of population are Ridsdale and West Woodburn, the latter being approx. 19 miles north of Hexham and 31 miles north west of Newcastle.
The origins of the parish name are uncertain and probably relate to the Celtic “carse” meaning “swamp or fen” as there are remains of a Roman fort (Habitancum) in a marshy area of the river Rede now known as Risingham.
West Woodburn has the main local facilities including a post office, shop and newsagent, first school, church, garage and inn serving good food. The area of the parish abounds with derelict mine workings and quarries, the main employment of the area now being farming and the tourism industry.
The rugged nature of the area, the sparse population and the ruined bastles (fortified dwellings) indicate the turbulent history of the 15th & 16th century cross border Reiver raids.
