An introduction to Corbridge

The parish straddles the River Tyne and extends over 14 square miles, the village of Corbridge, once a market town, is 4 miles east of Hexham and 20 miles west of Newcastle. In Roman times Corbridge acted as a garrison and supply town (Coria) to Hadrian’s wall and was at the cross roads of two major routes the north-south Dere Street and the Stanegate.

Corbridge is a sought after residential village and is on an elevated bank on the north of the Tyne and has a population of approximately 3,500. The pretty village centre has a full range of shops and boutiques, the parish church of St Andrew’s has a vicars Pele tower (fortified dwelling), there are many pubs, inns and eating establishments. There is a residential hospital, medical, dental and pharmaceutical facilities, a first school and a Middle School and numerous childminders and groups. Corbridge and Dilston both have Women's Institutes.

Corbridge is an excellent centre for walking and nearby Aydon castle to the north and the remains of Dilston castle (former home of the Earls of Derwentwater) are both worth a visit. The Northumberland County Show, the biggest one-day show in Britain, is held on the last Bank Holiday Monday in May.
