An introduction to Coanwood
Historians and naturalists alike would find plenty to study in the 11 square miles of Coanwood parish. The small villages of Coanwood, Lambley and the hamlet of Lanehead form the main centres of community. Coanwood is probably derived from the 9th century farmstead of a local from the “Wood of Coena”
Coanwood is some 18.5 miles from Hexham and 19 miles from Carlisle and has a first school and a nursery group and Lanehead is served by a part time post office. Lambley has a village hall and a C of E church and the County’s mobile library service visits the parish every two weeks.
The area is steeped in mineral mining history and for walkers, the South Tyne Trail follows the line of the defunct Haltwhistle to Alston railway. Included on this walk is the spectacular stretch over the 100 ft high Lambley viaduct arching across the river South Tyne. Coanwood is connected to Haltwhistle and to Halton Lea Gate by the 681 bus service.
