An introduction to Chollerton
The very edge of the “Reiver” country is just over 22 square miles in size. The main centres of population are Barrasford and Gunnerton while nowadays Chollerton and Colwell are barely hamlet size relics of their bygone 19th century mining and droving importance.
The parish name probably derives from the 12th Century “Celreton” from the Old English meaning “the farmstead of a person called Ceolferth” and the parish church of St Giles is at Chollerton.
The village of Barrasford, 8 miles north of Hexham contains a first school, childminding facilities and a general store and post office and the village has a well known inn serving good food. The Women's Institute meets at the hamlet of Colwell, nearby Chipcase castle is open to visitors and combines a walled garden and horticultural centre.
Quarrying at Barrasford remains the major industry and the Gunnerton crags
contain evidence of prehistoric settlements. Properties in the parish range from traditional and newly built stone dwellings to former local authority housing.
