An introduction to Broomhaugh and Riding Mill
Keen nature lovers, walkers and ornithologists can enjoy the great variety of wildlife and trails in the 3 square miles of the parish. Riding Mill is less than 6 miles to the east of Hexham and 18 miles west of Newcastle. There is a railway station (Newcastle to Carlisle line) in Riding Mill and bus routes 602, 613 and 904 serve the village. On the eastern outskirts of the village is the largest water pumping station in Europe moving water from the Kielder reservoir to the rivers Wear and Tees.
Broomhaugh is probably named from the Old English “clearing of broom close to the river” (haugh is local for a flat bank adjacent to the river), while Riding is the Old English for “a clearing”. Housing types are mixed with older and post war properties.
Riding Mill’s facilities include a care home, a children’s playgroup/nursery, first school, a village hall with all the usual activities including adult education, the church of St James (C of E) and a Methodist chapel. There is a post office and newsagents and a public house and restaurant. Along with other organisations, members of a Women's Institute meet in the village.
