An introduction to Acomb
A vibrant, traditional location just 30 minutes from central Newcastle by car, the parish of Acomb forms an area of 4.5 square miles and is 2.5 miles north of Hexham. The village probably derives its name from the Old English “Acum”, meaning “a place at the oak trees”.
Acomb is a former mining area and retains a small industrial estate. The village is a popular residential area and is 23 miles west of Newcastle with good east-west transport connections in Hexham and buses 880, 881 & 882 serve the village.
There is a wide spread of house types in the village ranging from modernised collier’s cottages and former post-war council and private housing to 19th Century and newly built stone faced houses.
Acomb has good local facilities with a post office, newsagent and general store, a fish and chip outlet, and three public houses serving good quality beverages and food. The village has a first school, four childminders, a Women’s Institute and a local football team, there is also a church (C of E) and a Methodist chapel.
